Author Todd Gitlin writes, "Once upon a time, in a century far, far away, there was an idea of a single, interconnected left in a single, interconnected world—a unified force, or a vanguard, or a virtual chamber of the deputies of the people, some entity whose mission was to lead the way toward the realization of a collective and universal ideal."
