We were recently interviewed by an editor of XFUNS magazine, a creative and design magazine based in Taipei, Taiwan. The magazine's aim is to introduce designers from all fields to the international community. Our 8-page feature, written in English and Chinese, included illustration and design work we've created for PrestoBingo, Theatre Project, Turnaround's domestic violence hotline and various editorial pieces.
Spur Renovations
It's hard to believe that we've been in our current location for almost 10 years. When we purchased the building in 1999, we renovated most of the entire 10,000 square foot structure, but the garage remained largely untouched. This year, we added a new, energy efficient foam roof, which allowed us to remove the decades old insulation in the garage and leave exposed beams - all while decreasing our energy usage by more than 25% so far! Next up in the renovation process are larger windows, new lighting and a fresh color for the exterior.
Serbin Communications
Serbin Communications, publishers of The Directory of Illustration, recently selected Spur to design their 26th directory, due to be released in January 2009. In addition to the directory, Spur designed a number of print collateral and online pieces. The first print brochure featured illustrator Mark Burckhardt on the cover (below) and included interiors by Red Nose Studio, Daniel Krall and Harry Campbell.
Theatre Project Posters in Communication Arts
We love working on Theatre Project every year. Dave has designed and illustrated posters for them for the past six years and is looking forward to many more seasons. The latest round just got into the Communication Arts Illustration as a series.
The Dungeon Masters
David Plunkert designed and illustrated the poster for the Antidote Films Documentary "The Dungeon Masters" which debuted as an official selection at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival.
Directed by Keven McAlester "The Dungeon Masters" is an exploration of the subculture of Dungeon and Dragons, which for over 30 years has offered gamers the chance to escape their mundane lives and participate in a world they might otherwise not experience. Popularity and power are based on creativity and imagination rather than social status or wealth, and success is based not on who you know but on what you do.
Icon 5
Spur Design is pleased to announce its partner level sponsorship of ICON5, the illustration conference to be held in New York City in July 2008. Little ole Spur joins other partner level sponsors such as Adobe, theispot, MICA and Xerox in supporting the most anticipated illustration conference yet. As a part of our support, we are producing the poster, program and mini-schedule. If you've seen the poster, you can imagine how excited we were to see Edel Rodriguez's great illustrations arrive in our studio.
The program will include even more art by a talented group of illustrators including Whitney Sherman, James Sturm, James Yang, Martha Rich and Luba Lukova.
We hope to see you at the conference!
One Maryland One Book 2008
Spur Helps Launch Maryland's New Statewide Reading Program
Saturday, June 14, we welcomed the launch of the statewide reading program One Maryland One Book. The goal is to get all of Maryland reading and talking about this year's book, A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey form the Inner City to the Ivy League, by Ron Suskind. We've been busy designing and illustrating the teacher's guide, reader's guide, poster, logo, bookmarks, stickers, and even the seven foot banners for the campaign.
Dave signed posters to help kick off the year long campaign at the Enoch Pratt library. Maryland's first lady, Katie O'Malley hosted the event.
